How Does Sound Travel Thru the Ground?

Research is underway this summer to combine interests in physics and music.  Sydney Blue, a PC junior with a double major in physics and music, is using her research “Sound Propagation in Granular Materials,” to study how to efficiently send sound through granular materials.

The Titusville, Florida student of PC said “Since the Earth’s surface is granular material, this work has many applications including land mine detection and oil exploration.”

Blue explained that granular materials are common materials that include sand and grains. However, they are relatively mysterious because they do not act like normal mediums such as water or air.

She said “This project interested me because the study of granular acoustics seemed like a nice intersection of my two majors. So far, I have been amazed at learning about the electrical components and the math behind sound production.”

Sydney Blue is involved in several music ensembles including the PC Choir, orchestra, opera and musical theater, hand bells, percussion ensemble, and theater. She is also a coordinator for the Student Volunteer Sevices for the Presbyterian Home.

Her work this summer is in cooperation with the PC Summer Fellows Program, which is designed to enhance the academic experience of PC students by providing them with opportunities to work with faculty during the summer. The program is intended for motivated students to gain research experience with direct faculty mentoring. Students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity in a living-learning environment.

New Laurens Master Plan to CPW, City Council

A new Master Plan for Downtown Laurens was presented to the Laurens Commission of Public Works last night by Main Street Director Jonathan Irick.  He said the plan is “to ensure that future projects and funding are utilized to the fullest order.” Irick said the idea is to help transform the Downtown area into an active place, the center of commerce and art where residents can interact, learn and grow.

Some of the ideas to achieve that goal included traffic configuration and utilizing present and future trails and greenways, as well as expanding the Downtown to include the Sullivan Park and Rich Hill areas.

Irick said another idea is to have a permanent home for the Farmer’s Market, noting this project could be a recipient of a USDA grant. The plan included renaming Palmetto Street as Festival Street, removing pavement to reveal the original brick surface. The plan projects buildings on the short street to host eateries and roof cafes. With vehicular traffic removed, the street would end at a new Amphitheater.

Jonathan Irick called the Historic Laurens County Courthouse as “The most underutilized building in Laurens County.” Ideas for expanding its use included accommodating programs for local collages, and adding trees and public art, especially highlighting Laurens’ rich African American Heritage.

Other ideas included additional playground area near the railroad.

Irick also talked of practical steps needed to achieve these goals, including trying to find local benefactors. He said in other upstate towns, benefactors have funded a local “Historic Boutique Hotel.”

The Commissioners last night were also shown an example of signs used in Traveler’s Rest as an example of what are called “Way-Finding Signs,” which are decorative and not that expensive.

The C.P.W. accepted the report on the new Laurens Master Plan as information. This evening, the plan will be presented to City Council, which is expected to vote on whether to accept the new plan as the Official Master Plan for the City of Laurens.

County Council Insists on New Budget

Last night Laurens County Council held another budget workshop in the painful process of trying to approve a new budget for the 2017/18 Fiscal Year. The county is currently operating on last year’s budget, pending completion of the new budget. Frustration with the long process this year was voiced last night by Council Chairman Joe Wood, and County Administrator Jon Caime.

Chairman Wood asked each council member, “Just what will it take for you to find a budget you will vote to pass?” Councilman David Pitts suggested “Let’s just go ahead and pass last year’s budget that was balanced, then we can just work on supplemental appropriations.” Councilman Nash agreed, but Council Members Garrett McDaniel and Diane Anderson said they would not vote for last year’s budget.

McDaniel said that they have been working too hard on the new budget to just accept last year’s. Ms. Anderson said that there are many new bills to pay since last year. Councilman Stewart Jones said he wanted to keep working with the new budget to try to balance it, and he wanted council to consider options to reduce spending.

Administrator Caime voiced his frustration by telling council, “I just don’t trust our numbers.” He added “When I arrived here auditors were switched, and if things had gone on as they were, the county would have been bankrupt in a year.” Caime apologized to council for his frustration but said “I have got to give this county a firm financial picture, I am just trying to get your money aligned with your rules.”

Council agreed with Caime that they will reconsider another updated budget after he does more financial research. “Put all paper work you have aside and a new printed budget will be ready by the weekend,” said Caime,

There will be another budget session with the new printed budget available where, Caime said, “We can examine it line by line and finalize this thing.”
