Over the New Year’s Holiday Clinton Public Safety continued to receive complaints about juveniles with fireworks. Another kind of fireworks erupted yesterday after Laurens City Police were dispatched to Jackson Street late morning on a report that a child had thrown lit fireworks onto the fabric roof of a convertible, damaging the rooftop.
Officer James Nolen noted damage to the convertible’s fabric roof appeared to be freshly committed. It was determined a 10-year-old boy had thrown the fireworks from a neighbor’s house. As the officer talked with the adults involved, the child’s mother began to argue with the victim. At one point she reportedly began to walk towards the victim’s house across the street and she was placed in investigative custody.
Officer Nolen advised the child’s mother and grandmother that they should better supervise the child so that he doesn’t damage property of others. He advised the car owner to get an estimate on repair of the vehicle to the child’s mother as soon as possible so she could pay for repairs.
