New affordable housing in Laurens was the first item of discussion at last night’s Laurens City Council, which was the first meeting of 2014. Jim Childress, Executive Director of Genesis Homes presented council with sketches of new houses scheduled to be built at 106 Davis Street and 103 Jackson Street. The houses will be rental homes for low-income families. They are to be approximately 1200 square feet and will have three bedrooms and two baths. They are to rent for $400–$500 a month for families having an income of 50 to 60% less than the median family income.

The ground breaking will be on the fourth of February at the Davis Street location and it will be open to the public.

Genesis Homes is a South Carolina company which facilitates neighborhood  revitalization in low-to–moderate income areas in the Upstate of South Carolina. It’s a 501-C-3 organization and is a certified Community Development Corporation with the South Carolina Department of Commerce. Childress told council last night “I am hoping that those living in less desirable houses will want to move in.”
