Clinton High students can now take a course at CHS that leads to certification as a firefighter. The idea was presented to the District 56 School Board at their August meeting Monday evening. The concept is a joint venture of the South Carolina Fire Academy and the State Department of Education. Clinton Public Safety Fire Commander Scott Shiflet, who will assist in Instructing the class, told the Trustees about the program that saves travel to Columbia. He said all CHS students in the class will become a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Junior Firefighter program and thus have access to fire stations and equipment. Students successfully completing the classes will earn Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification on their 18th birthday. The District 56 School Board approved the new classes, which will begin immediately.

Benefits of this partnership include Clinton High School getting access to classes which will interest students in learning something completely different and the Department of Public Safety had the opportunity of acquiring new trained and certified firefighters.
