Laurens City Police Officer Logan Kanipe reportedly observed a car without headlights and made a traffic stop on North Harper at Fleming at 9 minutes after midnight this morning. A 28-year-old Charleston woman was found to be driving while her license is suspended. She was arrested and initially charged with Driving under Suspension and with having an Expired License on the vehicle. She was taken to the Johnson Detention Center while officers found themselves looking for someone to care for the woman’s 1 ½ year-old son. The woman indicated the father of an older child lives in Abbeville and she would trust him to care for the toddler while she’s in custody. Later, the Highway Patrol called Laurens Officers to advise that this man would not be making it to Laurens. He had been stopped and it seems alcohol and perhaps some marijuana may have been involved in his arrest. At this point, Laurens Police contacted the woman’s elderly grandmother in Charleston, who got someone to drive her to Laurens. Arriving around 5 am today, she took custody of the toddler and headed back to Charleston.
We understand the toddler enjoyed a game of tossing a ball with officers while waiting on his great-grandmother to arrive.
