Laurens City Council this week received an update on the progress being made to rid the city of dilapidated buildings. At Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting, Laurens City Building and Zoning Director Clay Rykard said that of 12 buildings initially targeted, the owners have demolished 2. Owners are now trying to rehabilitate 5 of the structures. Another has been sold and with two more the owners are getting demolition permits. Rykard noted that this leaves three that the city will have to put a lean on and tear down. He said two of these houses are on Simpson Street and another is at 510 Fleming Street. Clay Rykard noted the city has received some funding from the state and now has some money to work with.
