It’s a lonely place surrounded by people and activity. In fact, it’s within site of the Laurens County Airport yet very few know it’s there.
Potters Field is the final resting place of hundreds of people who died without the financial means to pay for a funeral. The graves are generally unmarked and only rarely is there any evidence that there has been a visitor.
“But every one of these people was someone’s brother or daddy or child” says Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols. “They shouldn’t be just completely forgotten.”
On Monday, Nichols along with Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek came to Potter’s Field. They brought flowers for the single monument that identifies the place as a cemetery.
After placing the flowers there was a moment of silence then “Well, that’s it.” said Nichols and the unnamed resting there were once again alone. Alone but not quite forgotten.
