Some residents north of Laurens were evacuated from their homes for a while yesterday afternoon as a fire in one house threatened to spread. Laurens County Sheriff’s Lt. Kenneth Richards was patrolling on Highway 14 coming from the Gray Court area around 4pm when he noticed a back plume of smoke in the air toward Metric and Ghost Creek Road. He notified 911 and proceeded to the scene, joined by Sgt. Veal and Lt. Wilkie. After first thinking this was a brush fire, they discovered a residence at 663 McCauley Road was fully involved in flames. The residence was destroyed by the flames. The owner was located in Simpsonville and advised of the fire. Several fire departments responded to fight the fire. Other residents of McCauley Road were evacuated for a time because the fire was getting out of control. The case of the fire was being investigated by Lt. Shelton, who also responded to the scene.
