The next pursuit vehicles for Clinton will not be cars, but SUVs. City Manager Frank Stovall last night asked City Council to approve the purchase of two new police pursuit vehicles. Bids were presented for two police SUV’s. In this case – Ford Explorers. Mr. Stovall told council that these were specialty vehicles built by Ford. They look like Explorers but really they just have an Explorer’s “skin”. Both units are all wheel drive which will enable the Department of Public Safety to more effectively meet the city’s needs in the event of a snow event. The extra room of the SUV will allow for carrying turnout gear for officers who are cross trained as firefighters and for advanced equipment for officers who are members of the Special Response Team. Three bids were received. Vic Bailey Ford of Spartanburg had the state contract bid at $56,192, Tindol Ford of Gastonia, North Carolina bid $56,950.02 and Firmin Ford of Laurens bid $55,380. Stovall asked council to approve the purchase of the new police units from Firmin Ford at the low bid price of $55,380. After some discussion, the purchase was approved by unanimous vote.
