Clinton City Council was asked to consider an amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance last night. Stephen Taylor, Director of Community and Economic Development, explained that the current zoning ordinance provides for only two industrial classifications: Light Industrial (L-1) and Industrial (I-1). Both classifications have limitations that would exclude major industrial prospects. A new classification for Industrial (I-2) was proposed that would allow major industrial employers to locate in Clinton. City Manager Frank Stovall explained that the use of this new classification would only be recommended for areas on the edge of Clinton’s city limits and that amending the ordinance would only create the classification, not assign any property to that classification. Changing any property to the I-2 zone would still require approval of City Council.
With that assurance council voted unanimous first reading approval to amend Clinton’s zoning ordinance creating the I-2 classification for major industry.
