Laurens City Police and Highway Patrol troopers were conducting a traffic safety check point at the intersection of Fleming Street and Mill Street at 2:40 Saturday morning when a green Chevrolet Sedan approached. The driver said he dind’t have his driveer’s license with him, but gave his license number. Meanwhile, officers reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and asked the man to pull over to a nearby parking lot. They asked if there was marijuana in the vehicle, and he reportedly said no, but he’d been smoking earlier. They performed a check on the vehicle and did not locate any marijuana. A small child was in the car. Police had a passenger call a licensed driver to come get the vehicle. A check reportedly indicated the driver had a suspected license, and bench warrants from Clinton Public Safety. He was charged with Driving Under Suspension and taken to the Johnson Detention Center. County Detention personnel reported finding a small bag of marijuana in the man’s gym shorts under his blue jeans, but no additional charges were filed. The marijuana was to be destroyed.
